Client: Genomics Novartis Foundation, which houses over 200 researchers and engineers who are revolutionizing experimental science in the ostgenomic era (the period of time after the completion of the Human Genome Project), is developing advanced technologies such as cellular genomics to treat neurodegenerative and metabolic diseases and cancer.

Need: To protect and finish with high performance coatings a dramatic 60-foot high trellis extending 1100 linear feet in an arc parallel to the main buildings.

Challenge: Steel cylindrical poles, canopies, skylights and trellises were sanded and wiped, then coated with Tnemec zinc primer, then sanded and wiped again. They were then coated with Tnemec epoxoline intermediate coat, then sanded and wiped, then coated with Tnemec endura-shield topcoat. As Novartis is close to the ocean in La Jolla, not only were these special coatings essential but their application during optimum humidity conditions was critical as well. In addition, the task had to be completed before the rainy season and almost all of the application done from booms, scissor lifts and scaffolding.

The Solution: Thirty General Coatings painters led by estimator Victor Canizales and foreman Arturo Escalera completed the job in 20 weeks, working closely with Jeff Salesky of DPR Construction, Dennis Amyot of Tnemec and Dennis Carnevale of Arise Waco Scaffolding.

Result: A beautiful and impenetrable paint application on a dramatically designed trellis, completed before the rains and without incident at perilous heights.

Moral: Do you have a tough demanding job to do? Call the General Coatings “dream team.” They make tough jobs look easy.

Did you know...?

…Easier interior painting: Cover doorknobs, locks and other hardware with petroleum jelly for faster cleanup. Add a few drops of black paint to every quart of white to prevent yellowing. To store a paintbrush or roller in the middle of a project, put it in a tightly sealed plastic bag in the freezer. When sealing the lid of a paint can, put a thin layer of petroleum jelly around the rim so it will reopen easily. Use vegetable oil to clean oil-based paint off hands. - Linda Cobb, Phoenix-based cleaning expert and author of Talking Dirty with the Queen of Clean.
