How About Some Color
By David Howell, CLTM, CLTI, Certified Arborist

When you look at your property whether it is a condominium, professional building, industrial park, hotel or shopping mall, you need to look at the atmosphere that you want to create. Do you want a soothing feeling, or a “look at my sign” feeling; it all comes down to COLOR. Adding color to your landscape stimulates people to buy a product or a service. Your clients will appreciate that you care that they sell their products as well as keep their landscape areas filled in.

Professionals that manage buildings know how important color is and how it adds to the appearance and investment of the property. That is why a good color palette is important in that it creates the feeling that you are looking for. Annual colors are the best way to show off what you want your customer or clients to see.

HOW TO GET THE COLOR YOU ARE LOOKING FOR

In the landscape industry, we use floral colors in the form of ANNUAL COLOR. Annuals are plants that grow, flower, set seed and die in the same season. They are also known as bedding plants because of the way they transform the landscape from season to season. There are many colors to choose from: red, yellow, purple, blue, white and pinks; but the trick is to put them all together to get what you are looking for. With so many colors you can develop variety and versatility in your landscape as well as the ability to change as often as you like.

WHEN TO CHANGE COLOR

January, April, July and October are the best times to change your color. You get the best selection of colors at these times of year and your color will always look fresh and vibrant. Depending on your budget and your property you can go as long as every four months. Even then the color will start to look tired. Remember that the only color that you need besides your normal color scheduled changes is holiday change-outs such as Christmas. Then the proverbial seasonal favorite “poinsettias” may be added. So be sure to talk to your representative about getting colors ordered ahead of time so you will get the best selection at the perfect time.
