Did you know...?

... Giving aspirin to heart patients soon after bypass surgery dramatically lowers the risk of death and complications, contradicting long-held worries that the tablets can trigger disastrous bleeding, a major study found. The surprising results -- from 5,065 patients at 70 medical centers in 17 countries -- should quickly change how doctors handle the 1 million patients worldwide who undergo coronary bypass surgery each year, said researchers at the Ischemia Research and Education Foundation.

CLIENT: 600 Front Apartments at 600 Front Street, San Diego, owned and professionally managed by Meric National and Halenza Partners.

NEED: 600 Front wished to have the exterior of its 5 story, 180 unit apartment property repainted, including its dramatic interior courtyard, embellished with striking contemporary shapes.

CHALLENGE: As 600 Front was virtually surrounded by construction on all sides, cooperation from many people was essential. In addition, the painting had to be started in February (often a rainy month) and finished by June. The exciting architecture of the building demanded the use of boom lifts, scaffolding and 60' ladders. The painting challenge consisted of painting the exterior walls brick, salmon and yellow with cobalt blue accents and the interior walls white with thirteen different colors for doors and railings and three for flower pots that would match with the colors of the adjacent fountain tile. In addition, other trades were working in the same area, most notably tile setters setting tile and deck coaters surfacing the stairs.

THE SOLUTION: Roel Construction’s David Castro allowed us to share his street permit for Roel’s Renaissance project on Front St. Buzz Humerickhouse of Traffic Control Services ran interference for us at city hall with respect to meters and sidewalks. Mike Schidler of Arise Waco Scaffolding provided the right ladders, lifts and scaffolding as needed. Jeff Hulst of Sherwin Williams engineered the arrival of correct colors on time.

The General Coatings’ team of estimator Gary Vittori, Superintendent Brando Mendez, and foreman Oswaldo Rodriguez and his cadre of 15-25 painters collaborated to finish in May, one month early. The management team of Betty and Marv Ens provided exceptional support to all parties.

THE RESULT: A showplace performance on one of San Diego’s most exciting buildings. See it on www.600.com.

THE MORAL: Do you have a tough demanding job to do? Call the General Coatings’ “Dream Team.” They make tough jobs look easy.
